TESOL with TKT Exam Preparation

The Worldwide School TESOL plus TKT plus Internship programme aims to:

  • Develop students’ understanding of TESOL theory and methodology
  • Increase students’ awareness of current TESOL practice and resources available for language teaching
  • Provide students with opportunities to observe qualified and experienced native ESL instructors in the classroom
  • Provide students with opportunities to participate in peer observations and team-teaching
  • Develop students’ knowledge of language and skills specific to the Cambridge TKT examination and practise TKT test tasks
  • Improve students’ general English language proficiency
  • Offer an extra 4 week internship option at the end to further practice what is learned

Programme Outline

  • 5-week programme
  • Full time (26 hours per week)
  • $2375, including text book and exam fee
  • $2900, for the 4 week internship option at end of course

Prospective Students

Our TESOL plus TKT programme is designed for:

  • Non-native speakers of English who are interested in learning more about the theory and practice of English language teaching (TESOL).
  • International language teachers who want to develop their knowledge of TESOL theory and practice, in an English-speaking environment.

Entry requirements

Entry to the programme requires satisfying one of the below criteria:

  • A current IELTS score of 5.0 academic or higher or
  • WWSE General English Upper-Intermediate level or
  • 65% or higher on the TESOL plus TKT offshore pre-test

Pre-test available

The pre-test is designed to give prospective students an estimate of their suitability for the TESOL plus TKT programme at Worldwide School of English. The test consists of 4 tasks including writing, reading comprehension, use of English and sample TKT items.

Programme Materials

Students will work from the official Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT) Course textbook, published by Cambridge University Press. Supplementary materials and practice exams will be provided free of charge.

The Teaching Knowledge Test (TKT)

The TKT tests professional knowledge about the teaching of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL). Students who complete the full 5-week programme are encouraged to take the exam, but it is not compulsory. We can arrange for students to take the exam at a local test centre in Auckland. The TKT exam is offered five times a year in Auckland.

2009 course and TKT exam dates

  • 9 February to 13 March (Exam: 14 March) (plus 4 week internship option)
  • 5 weeks: 13 April to 15 May (Exam: 16 May) (plus 4 week internship option)
  • 5 weeks: 20 July to 21 August (Exam 22 August) (plus 4 week internship option)
  • 5 weeks: 14 September to 16 October(Exam: 17 October) (plus 4 week internship option)
  • 5 weeks: 9 November to 11 December (Exam: 12 December) (no internship option possible)

TESOL + Internship

The internship part will be 4 weeks at a local NZ Government school.

Students have the opportunity to practice the skills they have learned on the course by teaching young New Zealand students and also learning more about teaching from some of New Zealand’s best primary school teachers.
